More frequent ultrasounds may be necessary for high-risk pregnancies. This measurement is most effective when combined with head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur bone length. These combined measurements provide a comprehensive estimate of fetal weight and gestational age, as well as an indication of brain growth. Healthcare providers aim for these measurements to fall within a normal range. The biparietal diameter usually expands from approximately 2.4 centimeters at 13 weeks to about 9.5 centimeters by the end of gestation. It's worth noting that BPD measurements become less reliable for predicting gestational age in the later stages of pregnancy, particularly after 20 to 26 weeks, where accuracy can vary by up to three weeks.
